What is the difference between a magneto and a distributor
They are also, generally, easier to maintain and understand for most people. What do you prefer on your tractors? Do you use a magneto, or is yours battery-powered? Have you thought about converting?
Tell us below. Great Read! I do have a new Cap, Rotor, Points and Condenser. I have cleaned up the generator and it seems to be able to charge. My question what would I need to do to replace the mag and generator with Distributor and Alternator? Please use the navigational links on your left to explore our website. Re: magneto vs distributor. A distributor needs an external battery or power source to operate.
Most [but not all] distributors use an externally mounted ignition coil. A magneto is a combination of a distributor and generator built into one unit. It is unlike a conventional distributor in that it creates its own spark energy without external voltage. No, Because it requires no battery or other source of electrical energy, the magneto is a compact and reliable self-contained ignition system, which is why it remains in use in many general aviation applications.
As the engine rotates, the distributor shaft cam turns until the high point on the cam causes the breaker points to separate suddenly. Instantaneously, when the points open separate current flow stops through the primary windings of the ignition coil. This causes the magnetic field to collapse around the coil. A magnet —hence magneto —spins in close proximity to a coil of wire. The two magnetos on most GA aircraft —the left and the right—each fire one of two spark plugs on each cylinder. An aircraft magneto is an engine driven electrical generator that uses permanent magnets and coils to produce high voltage to fire the aircraft spark plugs.
Aircraft magnetos are used in piston aircraft engines and known for their simplicity and reliability. Oil contamination causes such magnetos to malfunction and fail.
Engine oil can enter the magneto via a damaged magneto engine oil seal. Oil seals are known to deteriorate with age, operating hours in service and exposure to heat, including hot engine oil.

Very informative blog. Please Give more information about it. I really want…. Your email address will not be published. Important Point. What Is the Meaning of Magneto Ignition? Re: Magneto vs. Distributor Post by Matt Kirsch » Fri Mar 15, pm Unless you've got something very strange, you have one or the other, not both.
Both magneto and distributors have a distributor cap and wires. Perhaps that is where your confusion is? The difference is that a magneto generates its own electricity. A distributor uses battery power to make the spark. The reason they went to a distributor is because it's less maintenance and cheaper to build. Distributor Post by gitractorman » Fri Mar 15, pm The magneto has a distributor cap, so that it can distribute power to the individual spark plugs It is not the same as a regular distributor.
The reason a magneto was used was for the base model tractors that did not have headlights or electric start, is that the magneto generates spark mechanically therefore the tractor could operate without a battery.
Also, that was the technology of the day, and as many can attest, they still work today with little problems. With the addition of electric start and headlights, the magneto still provides spark for the engine, and the generator charges the battery. That's it, and the two sides of the electrical system do not really interact.
This tractor will still operate without a battery, however the starter and lights will not function. When you change to 12v power, you need a coil, starter, generator or alternator , regulator, etc. The tractor will not operate without a battery or if the battery dies. Personally, If I had a tractor that was basically complete, I would fix up the magneto system and keep it original.
